Independent Study
The Distance Learning office extends Weber State University's
quality education to students at home or work whenever they have time to learn.
Courses from a wide range of academic disciplines are available through independent study,
allowing students to complete course work at home (or anywhere) at their own convenience.
Over 2,000 students enroll in this self-paced individualized mode of study each year,
choosing among over 70 courses from more than two dozen
disciplines. Many of these courses meet core and general education degree
requirements at Weber State University.

Financial Aid
You may receive financial aid for distance
learning courses. Please view the WSU financial
aid office homepage for complete details. Tuition waiver scholarships cannot be used
for distance learning classes. All courses paid for by financial aid must be completed by
two to three weeks prior to the end of the semester. This time period gives your
instructor enough time to grade all lessons and exams, and submit a grade.
Faculty
and Staff Benefits
Weber State University faculty and staff and their dependents may take any distance
learning course for 50% off the tuition price.
Course materials may include: textbook(s),
course modules that include the required reading and written assignments and additional
study material, study guide, other supplemental materials, video- and/or audio-tapes, and
a computer tutor.
Course Modules
Course modules give step-by-step directions for doing the work required for each course
and provide study help, assignments, and other pertinent information. The course module is
sent you when you register for the course, so please do not order any course modules from
the WSU bookstore.
Textbooks
Textbooks may be ordered from the WSU bookstore or other source. See your course module
syllabus for the textbook(s) required for your course. You can contact the bookstore at 801-626-6352 for prices. The WSU bookstore stocks most
textbooks for distance learning courses, though some may need to be special-ordered. Special orders are generally available within 7-10 working
days. Bookstore hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday - Friday.
For more information please visit the WSU Bookstore homepage.
Computer Tutor Software
Some courses have computer tutor software or learning disks available. This software comes
on 31/2-inch disks for use with an IBM-compatible computer.
If you do not have a home computer, there are many computers on
the WSU campus (in the computer labs and in the Stewart Library) that can be used. If you
are not located close to WSU, your local public libraries and university or college
libraries may provide access to computers with this capability.
