You may receive financial aid for distance learning courses. Please view the WSU financial aid office homepage weber.edu/financialaid/ for complete details. Tuition waiver scholarships cannot be used for distance learning classes.
Students taking independent study courses at Weber State University may be eligible to receive federal financial aid if they are in compliance with specific federal policies. The financial aid award can only be released after the student has completed at least 50% of the course work in each independent study course they are taking by the end of the 7th week of the semester. Since the funds cannot be released until mid-semester, students must pay for their independent study class at the time of registration.
Additionally, independent study courses must be completed within the 15-week semester in which you register; all course work must be submitted no later than two weeks prior to the end of the semester in order to allow instructors sufficient time to evaluate course work and submit final grades. Failure to complete independent study courses within the specified semester may jeopardize your eligibility for financial aid in the future. Because of this semester-based completion policy, students on federal financial aid may NOT enroll after the third week of the semester.
Further, there are federal guidelines regarding the amount of independent study credit that can factor into your financial aid eligibility. If you intend to use financial aid for your independent study courses, it is important that you contact the WSU financial aid office (801-626-7569) and the independent study office (801-626-6600) for required forms and detailed instructions prior to registering for courses. The Financial Aid Student Agreement Form must be submitted with the registration form. You can obtain these forms either in the current copy of the distance learning catalog, or by contacting the registration office at 801-626-6600.

The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization (INS) may not consider independent study courses in determining a student's full course of study. This may affect F-1 visa status. However, online courses may be considered.

If you are on the Weber State University faculty or staff, or are one of their dependents, you may take any independent study course for 50% of the listed tuition price. Please note that because of funding limitations, university and departmental tuition waivers cannot be accepted.

Course Modules
Students are given a course module at the time of registration. Modules are included in the tuition fees, except for those listed in specific course descriptions. These modules contain all the information students need to complete their independent study course including textbook information, how to complete your assignments and submit them to the instructor. Click here to see a sample of an independent study course module (1.53 MB PDF).
Textbooks
Students may order your textbooks from the Weber State University bookstore or other source. Course material contains specific information including title, edition, author and ISBN#. The WSU bookstore carries most textbooks for independent study courses, but some may have to be special ordered. For further information visit the bookstore online.
Other Media
Some Independent study courses include audio tapes, video tapes and/or computer software. Individual course descriptions will include information concerning availability and costs for these additional materials. Internet access may be required for some courses. If you do not have Internet access, check course syllabus carefully to be sure access is not a requirement for that course. It is the student's responsibility to protect their computers against viruses by using appropriate virus protection software.
Some courses have computer tutor software or learning disks available. This software comes on 3 ½-inch disks for use with IBM-compatible computer. If you do not have a home computer, there are many computers on the WSU campus (in the computer labs and in the Stuart Library) that can be used. If you are not located close to Weber State, your local libraries and university or college libraries may provide access to computer with this capability.

Course Time Limit
As a student taking correspondence courses through independent study, you will have six months from the date of your enrollment to complete the course. You will have, however,
the option to complete courses on an accelerated schedule. Under normal circumstances, you may submit up to one-fourth of the required lessons per week. If you intend to complete your course in less time than this, you must obtain prior approval from your instructor, using the form included in your course module.
Overload Registration
- Students may register for a maximum of 20 credit hours without special
permission.
- Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better may petition for a
maximum of 24 credit hours, and students with a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or
better may petition for additional credit hours. Petition forms are
available from academic departments or the Registration Office.

Independent study students must meet the same academic standards and you are subject to the same regulations regarding honesty in your work on assignments and examinations as students taking courses on campus. You may obtain a copy of the standards by visiting http://weber.edu/ppm/6-22.htm or by contacting the independent study office. Violation of these standards and regulations may result in your failing courses and your dismissal from Weber State University.

Grading for lessons and exams is explained in each course study guide. Based on your work, you will receive a final letter grade (A, B, C, D or E) for courses. You may exercise a credit/no credit option prior to completing 60% of the course requirements. Courses taken on a credit/no credit basis do not could toward general education or major/minor requirements. Consult the WSU catalog for further information on grading policies.
T (Temporary) Grad
If you do not complete a course before the end of the semester in which you registered, a grade of "T," indicating work in progress for that course, will be recorded on your transcript. When you complete the course, the final letter grade submitted by your instructor will replace the "T" on your transcript.
UW (Unofficial Withdrawal)
If you do not complete or officially withdraw from a course during the allotted time, you will receive a grade of "UW" for that course. A "UW" is equivalent to a failing grade and will affect your GPA (grade point average) accordingly.

Lessons
Completing and submitting lessons is central to succeeding in an independent study course. Carefully preparing and submitting assignments according to information in the course module and textbook. Instructors evaluate the work and make suggestions for continued study. This is the student's primary method for communicating with their instructors.
We work to ensure that graded lessons and exams are returned to the student in a timely manner. There may be delays when the university is closed for scheduled holidays and between semesters. In addition, some faculty are off campus for extended periods, making longer delays unavoidable.
