- [CHAPTER 1, p. 8] Figure 1.5: the point
labeled "Inferior conjunction" should be "Superior conjunction." The
point of inferior conjunction is on the same orbit, between Earth and the Sun.
- [CHAPTER 1, p. 14] Figure 1.12(b): 76.5o
should be replaced by 73.5o and 1.03 m should be replaced by 1.04 m. The
caption should also indicate that the data are for an observer located at 40o N
latitude.
- [CHAPTER 1, p. 16] The second line from the
top should read, "Approximate expressions for the changes in the coordinates are
given by ...."
- [CHAPTER 1, p. 16] The precessed
right ascension of Altair should be 19 hours, 50.2 arcmin rather than arcsec.
- [CHAPTER 2, p. 25] The second line from the
bottom should read, "joined him later in Prague" rather than "at

- [CHAPTER 4, p. 109] Immediately
above Eq. (4.37), the expression the wavelength should read $\lambda = \nu/c$.

"Caucus Mountains" should be spelled "Caucasus Mountains".
- [CHAPTER 6, p. 179] On line 18, "adaptive
optics" should be replaced by "active optics." Two lines lower
should read, "... different positions. (Another technique, adaptive optics,
analyzes the displacement ...." The sentence after that should begin "The NTT
observatory also uses ...."
- [CHAPTER 6, p. 184] Two lines above

ionized hydrogen."
- [CHAPTER 8, p. 254] Problem 8.16:
"Formalhaut" should be spelled "Fomalhaut". (There are two
instances of incorrect spellings.)
- [CHAPTER 9, p. 289] The italicized phrase
starting seven lines from the bottom should read, "when looking at a star, we see
down to an average vertical optical depth of $\tau_v \approx 2/3$, averaged over the disk
of the star."
- [CHAPTER 9, p. 294] (a) The equation at
the beginning of the page should read $(F_c - F_\lambda)/(F_c - F_\lambda_\circ) = 1/2$
(b) The first line of the second paragraph should read, "Three main processes
are responsible ... ."
- [CHAPTER 9, p. 296] In the first
line of Example 9.8, a line break should not have occurred between "5770" and
"K" (the temperature unit).
- [CHAPTER 9, p. 309] Problem 9.16(a) should
read, "Show that in a spherical coordinate system, with the center of the star at the

- [CHAPTER 9, p. 310] Problem 9.24(a): omit the
$\lambda$ subscript in the first equation.
- [CHAPTER 9, p. 312] Problem 9.25: line 3
should read, "... of the line (let $F_{\lambda} =0$), and the minor ...."
- [CHAPTER 10, p. 359] In the third
line below Eq. (10.84), "10.84" should be in parentheses.
- [CHAPTER 10, p. 379] Line 1 should read:

are incorrect for points 7 and 8 of the 15 solar mass model. Point 7 should read

acknowledge J. Barnes.
- [CHAPTER 24, pp 1084 -- 1085] The third equation on p. 1084 should be M_{\rm
in} = 2\int_0^h \rho_0 e^{-z/h} A \,dz=1.26\rho_0Ah. Note that this changes the numerical
factor from 2.35 to 1.26. The correction leads to different numerical factors for several
of the equations that follow: for g(h), the factor should be 2.53 (rather than
4.7); for U(h) the factor should be 1.26 (rather than 2.35); for h(T) (Eq.
24.9) the factor in the denominator should be 2.53 (rather than 4.7); and in Example 24.4,
h(106 K) = 2.2 kpc (rather than 1.6 kpc).
- [CHAPTER 24, p. 1093] Problem 24.7: the first
sentence of part (b) should read "The combined visual luminosity of the central
galaxies M105 and NGC 3384 is LV = 2.37 x 1010 L_${\odot}$
