Weber State University Department of Performing Arts Presents:
Orchesis Dance Theatre’s Fall Concert
This performance is directed by Joanne Lawrence and featuring the choreography of five student choreographers and faculty member Amanda Sowerby.
Dance faculty Amanda Sowerby’s three part piece “Cold: A Moving
Triptych,” will explore the emotional, physical and psychological
aspects of her subject. The will be incorporating American Sign
Language in this large work with also uses the most dancers of any
work in the performance.
Christina Taylor’s “Porch Swing Railroad” was inspired by music of
the American South and the myriad emotions that take place on the
proverbial “front porch” of our country. Taylor is a senior,
graduating at the end of this semester with a major in Dance and a
minor in Music.
Annika Black, a senior in Dance with a minor in Multimedia, presents a
dance about the seven stages of grief, “Entomb.” This work will
include video dance.
Emily Bokinskie, a Dance senior, portrays the darker side of humanity
in “Compartmental Theory.” She questions, “What makes a violent
person?” and then explores the inability to connect or empathize with
others. She says, “If we do not search for love for humanity and do
not acquire moral values, if we continue to ignore those struggling
around us, then we are bound to witness more crimes and destruction.”
“Say it,” by Dance senior Tayna Halbert, shows unique voices coming
together in a celebration of individuality. Her dancers are all
students from Ben Lomond High School, where she is working with the
dance program. The project is the first senior thesis from a Dance
Education major at WSU and is also the first to include high school
students in an Orchesis Dance Theatre concert.
Brittnie Rivera uses multiple disciplines in her work “Disintegration
for Reunification.” In addition to choreographic, she will be singing
a traditional hymn, “Doxology,” with her sister and has also shot and
edited video that is included in the piece.
