ALFIE KOHN

Manipulating children's behavior with traditional discipline may produce short-term obedience, but to help kids grow into good people, we have to shift from "doing to" to "working with" strategies -- and make it clear to them that they don't have to earn our love.

Alfie Kohn writes and speaks widely on education, parenting, and human behavior. His ten books include PUNISHED BY REWARDS: The Trouble with Gold Stars, Incentive Plans, A's, Praise, and Other Bribes (1993), NO CONTEST: The Case Against Competition (1986), and, most recently, UNCONDITIONAL PARENTING (2005). Kohn has been featured on hundreds of TV and radio programs, including the "Today" show and two appearances on "Oprah." He lives (actually) in the Boston area, and (virtually) at www.alfiekohn.org.
