Manipulating children's behavior with traditional
discipline may produce short-term obedience, but to help
kids grow into good people, we have to shift from "doing to"
to "working with" strategies -- and make it clear to them
that they don't have to earn our love.
Alfie Kohn writes and speaks widely on education,
parenting, and human behavior. His ten books include
PUNISHED BY REWARDS: The Trouble with Gold Stars, Incentive
Plans, A's, Praise, and Other Bribes (1993), NO CONTEST: The
Case Against Competition (1986), and, most recently,
UNCONDITIONAL PARENTING (2005). Kohn has been featured on
hundreds of TV and radio programs, including the "Today"

Alan
J. Hawkins, Ph.D., is a professor of Family Life at
Brigham Young University and a Certified Family Life
Educator. In 2003-2004, he was a visiting scholar with the
Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services, working on the Federal Healthy
Marriage Initiative. He is a member of a national team
building the National Healthy Marriage Resource Center, a
federally funded, web-based clearinghouse of information to
support efforts helping couples form and sustain healthy
marriages.
