Weber State University Police Academy - Admission Requirements
ENTRY LEVEL MODULE 1

SPECIAL FUNCTIONS OFFICER (SFO) REQUIREMENTS

Section 53-6-203 Utah Code Annotated states that every applicant for admission to the training programs conducted by a certified peace officers training academy shall meet the following standards and requirements before being admitted:

  1. United States Citizenship
  2. Minimum age of 21 years at the time of graduation from the academy. However, a student may enter the academy at the age of 20.
  3. Fingerprinting and search of local, state and national fingerprint files to determine whether applicant has a criminal record; final certification to be withheld until this search is completed.
  4. Shall not have been convicted of a crime for which applicant could have been punished by imprisonment in a federal penitentiary, or for which the applicant could have been imprisoned in the penitentiary of this or any other state. A waiting period is required if the applicant has been convicted of an offense involving dishonesty, unlawful sexual conduct, physical violence, or the unlawful use, sale or possession of a controlled substance. If you have been convicted of domestic violence (where no plea in abeyance has been issued) you are ineligible.
  5. Be a high school graduate or furnish evidence indicating equivalent achievement.
  6. Good moral character as determined by a background investigation.
  7. Free from any physical, emotional, or mental conditions which might adversely affect the performance of duty as a peace officer.

  9. Academic Test: All applicants must pass the National Police Officer Selection Test (NPOST) This test is divided into four sections. The specific skills tested include: mathematics, reading comprehension, grammar and report writing. A minimum score of 70% is required in each section. It takes approximately Two Weeks for the applicant to receive the test results.
     

Please note:  The applicant must pass the NPOST before starting the police academy. A background clearance will be conducted by POST on each academy candidate.

MODULE 2

LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER CURRICULUM (LEO) REQUIREMENTS

Be currently certified as a
Corrections or Special Functions Officer or have completed a certification course for Corrections, or Special Functions Officer (Module 1 SFO/BCO) in the past four years.

Completion Requirements

  • The student must pass several written examinations and demonstrate proficiency in various practical exercises.
  • Upon completion of these requirements, the student will be qualified for peace officer certification in the State of Utah.
