ACADEMIC PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
| Course Objectives: | Students will present the history of propaganda design from their home countries, design some propaganda themselves, participate in discussions on objective vs. rhetorical design, and, in general be led to an understanding of how graphic design has been historically employed as an instrument to malign certain individuals and groups. The symposium will conclude with an exhibition in Berlin to be conceived and produced by students from four countries in collaboration. |
| Courses: | Art 4400 will extend for the first 7-week summer term, beginning May 3 and ending June 18. The final two weeks will be conducted in Berlin in a symposium with students from Germany, the Middle East, and China. |

| Housing arrangements: | Berlin hostels in close proximity to the symposium site and mass transit stations. Breakfasts are included with the accommodation. Participants are responsible for most of their own lunches and dinners. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Selection Criteria: | Open to the Art Major/Visual Communication Emphasis of junior or senior class standing in the program. Recent graduates from the program would also be eligible to participate. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Risk Management: | Except for a few incidents of aggravated assault in urban areas against American citizens, violent crime is rare in Germany. Most risks involve pick pocketing or theft of unattended items. The U.S. State Department recommends the same safety precautions as for American cities. Information on safe travel practices will be discussed at orientation sessions. The trip will follow risk management procedures as outlined in the SUS Policies and Procedures Manual. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Emergency Management: | Students will be provided with telephone numbers of faculty, hostels, emergency medical clinics, and the U.S Embassy and Consulate.
