ACADEMIC PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
| Course Objectives: | After attending theory portions of the course in April and May, students will travel to Ecuador in June where they’ll experience the historical culture of Ecuador and provide healthcare. Students will be able to identify culturally appropriate nursing interventions in caring for people from Ecuador. They will also be able to discuss certain aspects of Ecuadorian culture related to its history, people, family life, politics, economics, education, geography, art, literature, music, and healthcare practices, beliefs and delivery systems. |
| Courses: | Nursing DV4000 Culture & Healthcare in Ecuador (2 credits) and Nursing DV4001 Clinical Experience Related to Culture and Healthcare in Ecuador (3 credits). |
| Assignments: | Papers, journals, service-learning activities, class attendance, presentations, projects, and participation. |

| Housing arrangements: | While in Quito students will stay in a large middle-class home remodeled for foreign students. In Guayaquil, Vinces, and Salinas accommodations will be in middle class hotels. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Selection Criteria: | Priority will be given to nursing students, DCHP students, and Premed students. Spanish language students can apply if they are fluent in the Spanish language. NOTE: All students must be interviewed by Sharen Brady before applying for the course. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Risk Management: | Quito is close to 10,000 feet in elevation. It may require some time to adjust to the altitude. Travelers are encouraged to consult with their personal healthcare providers before undertaking high altitude travel. Violent and non-violent crime is common in urban Ecuador. In an increasing number of cases, thieves are armed with guns and knives. Travelers should always remain alert to their surroundings, travel in groups, and maintain constant control of personal belongings. Avoid wearing expensive clothing, watches, and jewelry. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Emergency Management: | Students will be provided with telephone numbers of faculty, hotels, emergency medical clinics, and the U.S Embassy and Consulate. A central person in the U.S. will coordinate messages. The Continuing Education contact will be Craig LaRocco at 801-626-8740 or 801-781-0944. Tour directors will also have a phone, and the numbers will be made available upon arrival in Ecuador. |
