Join WSU Spanish professor Alicia Giralt to Guatemala where she’ll take students into the fascinating world of Mayan culture and microfinance. This program explores the Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhamad Yunis’ model of micro-lending to women who might not otherwise qualify for loans but who rarely default on their loans.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
| Course Description: | Students will acquire knowledge of Guatemalan women and culture as they improve their language skills and come to understand the concepts and implications of microfinancing. Courses being offered are WS 3850 Women of Guatemala (cross listed with WS 4830) and SPAN 3720 (requires signature of instructor), SPAN 2851, and SPAN 3000

| Additional Program Activities: | Free time and shopping, always in a groups. | ||||||||||
| Selection criteria: | Program is open to anyone 18 years or older with at least two semesters of Spanish with first preference given to WSU students. | ||||||||||
| Risk Management: | The program will follow risk management procedures as outlined in the WSU PPM. | ||||||||||
| Emergency Management: | Telephone communication will be maintained. Students will have the telephone number of each place we will be staying and there will be a central person in the U.S. who will coordinate messages. Emergency contact through Continuing Education will be Craig LaRocco at (801) 626-8740 or (801) 781-0944. There are nearby hospitals and medical clinics in the locations we’ll visit. We will contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate should the need arise. |
