ACADEMIC PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
| Course Description: | Graduate students may take up to six hours in MHA 6360 (3 hrs) Comparative International Health Systems and MHA 6830 Directed Studies (3 hrs). Undergraduates may take up to six hours in HAS/CLS/DENT/PAR/HTHS’NRSG/RADT/REST 4850 Study Abroad (1-6 hrs); HAS 4800 Individual Studies (1-3 hrs); SOC 2920 or 4920 Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-3 hrs); and/or SOC 4830 Readings and/or Projects (1-3 hrs). Students will be introduced to the health care and social welfare systems of Sweden and Finland. More specifically, by the end of the experience students will be able to compare and contrast entrepreneurial, mandated insurance, and national health systems from around the world. They will compare and contrast health and social systems of wealthy, transitional, and very poor countries, and compare the healthcare and social welfare systems of the United States, Sweden, and Finland. |
| Assignments: | Journal assignments, discussions, presentations, and, in some cases, a final paper on various questions and issues relevant to the student’s area of study, e.g. health care, sociology, politics, honors, etc. |
| Non-Academic Activities: | Free time for personal travel, shopping, and evening activities. |

| Housing and Food Arrangements: | Local hotels that include breakfast. Participants must provide their own lunch and dinners. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Selection criteria: | All participants will either be students at WSU or their guests. Must be 18 years old. Must be able to ride public transportation without problems, but will not be subject to unordinary physical challenges. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Risk Management: | Both Sweden and Finland are very developed countries with very limited health risks. Stockholm and Helsinki are big cities and there is always risk associated with students doing things on their own. Participants will receive detailed instruction on what is expected of them. The faculty will be available to help with basic needs such as transportation and meals | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Emergency Management: | Each participant will provide emergency contact information. Cellular phones work well in the cities being visited. Most of the hotels will have email access. We will keep in contact with Continuing Education should the need arise. |
