ACADEMIC PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
| Course Description: | This six-credit course is entitled "Rafting, Writing, and Hiking in the Canyons of Dinosaur National Monument.” Honors 3350/4830, English 3350/4830, MENG 6610/6710. Undergraduate prerequisites include:

| Student Assessment: | To determine if students have achieved the learning outcomes described above, they will be evaluated by a grade on the formal essay, quality of their presentations, and by their class participation. Criteria used in assigning grades will follow from those used in Dr. Crimmel's on-campus courses: A: outstanding; B: very good; C: average; D: poor; E: failing. |
PERSONNEL
| Faculty/Program Director: | Dr. Hal Crimmel, Associate Professor, English. His qualifications include a Ph.D. and M.A. in English. His specialties, as identified by his publications and courses taught are creative nonfiction, environmental literature, and field-based teaching. He has also published a book about Dinosaur National Monument for the University of Arizona press (2007), and two books about the practice of teaching in the field and about place. His field qualifications include many years of camping, hiking and kayaking, and several years as a professional river guide. He has taught this course twice. |

* Itinerary is highly dependent upon weather. Unusually wet or cold weather will make roads impassable and will prevent the group from reaching destinations in the Monument; as a result the course will take place in and around national parks in southern Utah.
| Travel Details: | All transportation will use WSU-certified drivers in WSU vehicles. |
| Housing and Food Arrangements: | The group will be camping at developed campsites maintained and supervised by the National Park Service. The group will prepare and cook all of their own meals, using food purchased prior to departure. |
| Additional Program Activities: | Camping, cooking, and exploring Dinosaur National Monument by foot and raft. |

| Risk Management: | Health: Potable water is available at the campsites the group will be staying at. There are no infectious diseases present on location that students would not encounter on campus. Safety: Safety will be the number one priority of this trip. The group will reduce risk by traveling in a university owned and maintained vehicle, and by staying in campsites maintained by the Park Service, which are either close to park facilities such as visitor centers, staffed by National Park Rangers, or have emergency radio installations. The use of alcohol will be prohibited. We will travel as a group to ensure the safety of the individual, and we will have a medical kit on hand at all times. Liability: The program director will by covered by WSU liability insurance; all students must have health and accident insurance per WSU Travel Program policies. |
