 Catalogue Description:
Discussion and analysis of special topics for Family Studies majors including professional skills, professional credentials, and the development of professional ethics.

CFLE Certification:
The National Council on Family Relations offers a Certified Family Life Educator credential to qualified individuals. This course is designed to help meet the CFLE Standard #9: Ethics. Assignments offer application by requiring students to (a) write a Personal Code of Ethics, and Class Mission Statement; (b) prepare a Teaching Outline addressing an ethical behavior; and (c) participate in group analysis of professional ethics in the fields of business and education.

NCFR Student Outcomes:
The National Council on Family Relations has adopted a document describing specific knowledge and skill outcomes for students in certified programs. These outcomes will be discussed in class and included in a Family Studies Major Program Portfolio.

Grading Criteria:

A letter grade will be assigned on the percent of points earned:
94 - 100% = A 74 - 76% = C
90 - 93% = A- 70 - 73% = C-
87 - 89% = B+ 67 - 69% = D+
84 - 86% = B 64 - 66% = D
80 - 83% = B- 60 - 63% = D-
77 - 79% = C+ 59 or below = E


The class may opt to have grades assigned on a straight A, B, C basis:
90 - 100% = A
80 - 89% = B
70 - 79% = C
60 - 69% = D
59% or less = E

NOTE: A 10% penalty will be assessed on all late work. Any work over one week late will not be accepted.

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS:
1. APA RESEARCH PAPER ROUGH DRAFT. Prepare a typewritten rough draft of your APA paper to be proofread in class. Include a Resources page with at least 10 entries in correct format. (Cite a minimum of five different types of media.) The paper will not be turned in, however credit for preparation will be assigned.

2. FIELD VISIT RESPONSE PAPER. Write a one page response to each field visit. Include a) where the visit was made; b) services available and clientele served; c) training and experience of the professionals and staff; d) your personal response to the experience: observations, insights, recommendations.

3. PROFESSIONAL PRESENTATION (Topic of Choice). Following guidelines discussed in class give a 10 minute professionally polished presentation on a topic of your choice. Dress and groom professionally; use technology, visuals and/or handouts as appropriate.

4. RESEARCH PAPER IN CORRECT APA FORMAT. Complete an 8-10 page research paper in correct APA format on a topic of your choice. Include a minimum of 10 references with at least one from each of the following: journal, book, internet, newspaper, and encyclopedia. Include a cover sheet, title page, abstract, and references. The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.) will be the grading standard.

5. COVER LETTER, RESUME, and THANK YOU LETTERS. Following the guidelines discussed in class prepare
a. a cover letter
b. a personal resume
c. a thank you letter
Write the letters to a prospective employer, actual or fictional. Tailor the resume to match a specific position. (Letters to a prospective graduate school are acceptable.) Print all letters on matching 20 lb. bond or resume paper. Envelopes are not necessary.

6. COHORT MISSION STATEMENT AND CODE OF ETHICS. Create a Mission Statement addressing this Cohort's uniqueness and goals; include what the group wants to be (character), and what the group wants to do (achieve). Create a Cohort Code of Ethics describing desirable behavior toward others (and each other) as reflected by the group's values, attitudes and principles. This assignment will be completed in class.

7. TEACHING PLAN OUTLINE. Prepare an outline plan for teaching one ethical behavior. Assume the role of an educator, social worker, counselor, parent, or other. Create a lesson plan appropriate to a specific setting.
a. Identify your teaching role.
b. Identify your student(s).
c. Identify the setting.
d. Identify the behavior to be taught.
e. Write an outline of the lesson.
(Briefly describe visuals, object lessons, activities, dialogue, etc.)
f. Identify desirable and MEASURABLE outcomes.

8. PROGRAM PORTFOLIO: Begin a portfolio to showcase your work and accomplishments as a Family Studies Major. The initial evaluation (part of your 2990B grade) will require:
an attractive binder
a Title Page
tabs for each of the 11 UCFR Standards
samples of student work from ChFam 2990B and ChFam 3350
samples of student work from ChFam 1400, 1500, 2100, and 2400
