Criminalistics
The field of criminalistics or forensic science is devoted to the application of
science and scientific principles to the solving of crimes. Commonly, this means the
proper collection, preservation and analysis of evidence such as blood, hair, bullets,
drugs, etc. It may include virtually anything that can connect a perpetrator to a
crime. Most criminalists work in government sponsored laboratories that range from
small crime scene units in police or sheriff departments, to giant facilities like the FBI
lab in Washington D.C. Almost all states have a state crime lab, as do most major
cities. Of course, there are more labs where there is more crime. Criminalists
also work in toxicology labs, many of which are private facilities that do drug testing of
physiological specimens, e.g. blood, and urine. Some criminalists prefer to work in
private labs that do work primarily in civil cases or for defense attorneys. Weber
State graduates in criminalistics are currently working in crime labs in Oregon,
Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Utah,
California, Illinois, Texas and
Colorado. |
