Fact:  Young people who began drinking before age 15 were four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence (alcohol addiction, commonly known as alcoholism) than those who began drinking at age 21.  (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism)

Fact: On a weekend night in Utah, as many as one out of ten drivers on the road is legally intoxicated (BAC of 0.08 or greater). Fact: 98.3% of Weber State Students believe that people risk harming
themselves if they smoke marijuana regularly.  (UHEBHS, 2005)


Fact:  Depressed individuals who also use alcohol or other drugs are more likely to attempt suicide than those who are depressed but don't drink or use illicit drugs, according to new research from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.  (SAMSHA)

Fact:  Roughly 60 percent of repeat drunk-driving offenders have suffered major depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder, according to a new study from the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation.  (PIRE)

Fact:  At least 14.5% of Weber State University Students report having 5 or more drinks in one sitting (considered to be Binge Drinking) in the past two weeks.  (UHEBHS, 2005)


Fact:  THC, the psycho active ingredient in marijuana, can be measured

Fact:  People who've recently smoked marijuana show the same lack of
coordination on standard "drunk driver" tests as people who have had

Fact: In the past 30 days, 96.6% of Weber State Students have NOT used
marijuana.  (UHEBHS, 2005)


Fact:  In the past year, 13.5% of Weber State Students report they
regretted their actions due to alcohol/drug use.

Fact:  A hookah smoker inhales 8 times more carbon monoxide and 36
times more tar in a typical session than someone who smokes 1
cigarette.

Fact:  According to the Weber State Student Conduct Code, students
engaging in the unlawful use, possession, distribution, sale,
manufacture or possession with purposes of distribution or sale of any
controlled substance or illegal drug will be subject to University

Fact:  It is against school policy for a student to sell, posses,
manufacture, distribute or consume alcoholic beverages on the
university campus.  (WSU Student code, B22)

Fact:  Students who have used drugs or alcohol within the last 30 days
report  lower GPAs than those who haven't used.

Fact:  84% of WSU state they abide by Campus Alcohol/Drug Policies.
