INTERNSHIPS
IN THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH PROMOTION &HUMAN PERFORMANCE

Guidelines for completing an internship in the Department of Health Promotion and Human Performance are subordinate to WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY policies and procedures.  If there is a conflict between our guidelines and the university, the higher authority will take precedence.

An internship is inclusive of all cooperative work, clinical, and field experiences.  The cooperative work experience is designed to be a closely supervised observational experience, whereas the field experience is more self-directed and the student has most of the responsibility for the project or program.

WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY CO-OP AND INTERNSHIP HANDBOOK:

In preparation for doing either a co-op or field experience, purchase the aforementioned document in the WSU bookstore.  Read the document carefully.  It explains in general terms the policies and procedures that govern internships at the university.  Several key documents are included.

Any sustained work experience is an opportunity for you to develop skills in customer service, communication, and – possibly- leadership.  You may land a golden job reference that will glow on a resume for a job reference as you are applying for internships.  These experiences will reflect your work ethics, dependability, and job related skills.

Internships are also on-the-job experiences that are more closely related to your specific program of study.  The internship you select should provide you with the very best opportunity to increase your competencies in your professional area and hopefully lead to future employment.

FYI - Weber State University is second in the nation for the most students involved in internships.

TYPES OF INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Numerous opportunities exist for internships in all settings of practice (clinical, worksite, school, and community).  Some of the internships include a stipend for services rendered due to the increased competition to attract interns.

Use of the career center, job fairs, bookstores, libraries, networking with alumni and friends are valuable resources to find internships.

Ellie Thompson, has flyers, internship announcements,  a directory of available internships and videotapes of past experiences of other students.

Other internship opportunities can be found on the Internet including HEDIR, professional associations such as the Association for Worksite Health Promotion, American College of Sports Medicine, and several job sites.  Check with your faculty advisor for specific web sites that apply to your emphasis area. Excellent  out-of-state opportunities exist.  Some of these agencies require applications as far in advance as one year.  Almost all agencies require an in-person interview.

REGISTERING FOR CREDIT

To register for credit, a student must discuss his or her intention with his/her HPHP faculty advisor well in advance of the intended semester.  Once the internship is secured and prior to registering, meet with the on-site supervisor of the internship to complete the contract, determine hours of credit, and obtain written approval from Faculty Supervisor.  Take the contract to Ellie and she will assist with your registration.
