INTERCOM:
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

by Fred Lillibridge

One of the bits of fine print a person should read before "running" for high office like vice-president of RMAIR is the part about having to write an article for Panorama. Wendy has assured me that I don't have to write very many words and suggested that I be nice. So, here goes :

First, I would like to commend Hans L'Orange for his leadership during the past year. He managed to keep things operating smoothly while starting a new job as director - SHEEO/NCES Communications Network. Thank you Hans - you have been an excellent role model and will be a tough act to follow.

Diane Muntal, RMAIR past president, completed her third year as a RMAIR officer at the Bozeman meeting. Her final act was to chair the nominating committee and run the election for RMAIR vice-president. Diane did a great job and her leadership will be missed. However, because she agreed to co-chair the 1999 RMAIR annual meeting our email relationship will continue.

I would like to thank Bruce Higley and Jacki Stirn for agreeing to be candidates for the office of RMAIR vice-president. Bruce is a long time IR veteran from Brigham Young University (BYU), who in addition to many other contributions to RMAIR, has done an excellent job helping to maintain our organizational history. Jacki has been our treasurer for many years and is largely responsible for our comfortable balance. I do not know why Bruce agreed to run but I know that Jacki was willing to do just about anything to get out of the treasurer job. I do not know exactly what Jacki did, but she will be able to finally give up the treasurer job because she was elected as our new vice-president in a photo finish. BYU was not able to totally escape official responsibilities because I asked Joe Curtin to become our new treasurer.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Cel Johnson, who chaired local arrangements and Jean Horst who served as program chair for hosting our annual meeting in Bozeman, Montana. Their professionalism and hard work was obvious to all who attended. I do not know how they managed to make the weather perfect, but some people have powers that just can not be explained. I would also like to thank Rich Howard for inviting us to his home and leading our van tour of Yellowstone National Park.

Next year's meeting will be October 20-22, 1999 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Diane Muntal and Kari Corburn (UNLV) will be co-chairing local arrangements and David Bobzien (University of Nevada-Reno) will be the program chair. John Porter (Arizona State University) also agreed to host the 2000 annual meeting "somewhere" around Phoenix.

The RMAIR meeting at the Seattle Forum has been tentatively scheduled for Monday, May 31 at 12:15-1:15 p.m. I look forward to seeing you there.

FROM THE EDITOR

by Wendy Miley

The fall conference in Bozeman, Montana featured fine presentations from RMAIR folks and national speakers. Special thanks go to Cel Johnson and Jean Horst, this year's conference hosts, as well as Jacki Stirn who presented this year's pre-conference workshop. Jean and Cel did a superb job, including ordering perfect weather! The Thursday evening event was enjoyed by all, including a leisurely stroll through the museum, the atmosphere of the Montana trail at dinner time, to the planetarium show following dinner.

Special thanks also go to Rich Howard, Cel Johnson, and Montana State for putting together a Saturday tour-van adventure to Yellowstone. For those of us staying past Friday, it was nice to get out and see the "Big Sky" over one of the finest and largest assemblage of geysers in the world.

I always look at the fall conference as a time to reflect on last year's past events and get a heads-up for what's new including changes to expect for the upcoming fiscal year. This year's conference hosted several changes for RMAIR.

Election and RMAIR officer appointments were announced at the conference and include the newly elected vice president, Jacki Stirn and newly appointed secretary/treasurer Joe Curtin of Brigham Young University. Both have been long standing members of RMAIR who have volunteered their time and efforts to RMAIR and continue to do so. Congratulation Jacki and Joe.

Kim Robinson, Next Editor of Panorama

Another change that will taking place is the editorship of Panorama. This will be my last column as editor of Panorama, with Kim Robinson of Eastern New Mexico University taking over in February of 1999. I know she will do a great job and I look forward to working with her in making a seamless transition.

Kim Robinson of Eastern New Mexico University will be taking over the Panorama editorship starting with the February 1999 issue and her email address is <kim.robinson@enmu.edu> . Welcome aboard, Kim.

This is a special column for me, in that I would like to thank all who have contributed to the success of Panorama. I have been editor since the fall of 1995 and have enjoyed being part of the team that made the RMAIR newsletter a success. Panorama is truly a group effort with contributions from so many both within the RMAIR membership and the higher education community at large. It's been a pleasure to work with all of you.

Special thanks go to Diane Muntal for her outstanding efforts as publisher and Jacki Stirn for all those sets of labels used for distribution of Panorama prior to it's electronic publication. Special thanks go to Nelle Moore, coordinator of Panorama, who always does an outstanding job and is always there to help. What can I say about our current publishers from my office: Anna Wilkinson, web page designer, and Kristie Gallardo, quarterly production. Without all of your efforts and contributions, the RMAIR newsletter would not be what it is today. Thank you, Kristie and Anna.

I would also like to extend a special thanks to our fellow RMAIRians who have volunteered to write-up the special features such as RMAIR SIG meeting re-caps, and the fall conference highlights. Your reports gave those unable to attend the forums and conferences an update on what's happening.

Last, but certainly not least, I would especially like to extend a special thanks to the reporters who have contributed to Panorama, many of whom have been and continue to volunteer to be reporters since before I became editor in the fall 1995. Three such reporters have been on board prior to 1995 and deserve recognition for their long-term service commitment to RMAIR. They are Jan Brown, Jerry Engstrom and Cel Johnson. Thanks Jan, Jerry and Cel.

Panorama Comings & Goings

Steve Chambers of University of Colorado, Colorado Springs has volunteered to be state reporter for Colorado and replaces Mark Klinger. I would like to thank Mark for all of his efforts and support, especially for hanging in there till a replacement could be found, and welcome aboard Steve, who has told me that some years back he was involved with Panorama during its inception phase. Welcome back Steve!
