Article I
Name and Purpose
- The
name of this Section shall be the Intermountain Section of The
Mathematical Association of America, Inc.
- The
purposes of the Intermountain section shall be to assist in the
improvement of education in the mathematical sciences at the collegiate
level by carrying out the purposes of the national organization within the
territory defined below in Article II, Section 1.
Article II
Membership
- The
membership of the Intermountain Section shall be as follows:
a) Members of The
Mathematical Association of America, Inc., residing in Utah, Southeastern Idaho
(Zip Codes 84000-84779, 83200-83299, 83400-83599) and other areas specified by
the Association.
b) Members of The Mathematical Association of America, Inc., not being
resident in the territory of this Section, who have become members of this
Section in accordance with Article VI of the Bylaws of The Mathematical
Association of America, Inc.
Article III
Officers
- The
officers of this Section shall be a Chairman, a First Vice-Chairman, a
Second Vice-Chairman, a Secretary-Treasurer, and either a Chairman-Elect,
or an Immediate Past Chairman (during alternate years). See Article III,
Sec. 4.
- The
Executive Committee of the Section shall consist of the officers of the
Section, and the Section Governor (ex officio).
- Each
section officer must be a member of The Mathematical Association of
America, Inc., and of the Section.
- The
officers shall be elected at the Annual Spring Business Meeting by
majority vote of Section members present, and shall assume office at the
close of the Spring Meetings. The Chairman-Elect shall be elected during
odd numbered years, shall serve one year as Chairman-Elect, two years as
Chairman, and one year as Immediate Past Chairman. A person while serving
as Chairman shall not be eligible for election as Chairman or
Chairman-Elect. The First Vice-Chairman and Second Vice-Chairman shall
serve two-year terms. The Second Vice-Chairman shall be elected in odd
numbered years. The First Vice-Chairman shall be elected in even numbered
years. The Secretary-Treasurer shall be elected for a three year term.
- No
later than October 1 of each year, the Section Chairman shall appoint a
nominating committee consisting of five Section members, each from a
different institution within the Section. Nominees for the offices to be
filled shall be announced at the same time Section members are notified of
the Annual Spring meeting. Nominations for the offices to be filled may
also be made from the floor at the meeting.
- The duties of the Section officers.
a)
The duties of the Chairman shall be:
i.
To preside at each meeting of the Section and of the Executive Committee
of the Section.
ii.
To appoint each committee of the Section and be an ex officio member of
each committee, unless directed otherwise by the membership of the Section at
an official Section meeting.
b) The duties of the
First Vice-Chairman shall be to coordinate the planning of Section meetings and
to work with the program committee for each Section meeting.
c) The duties of the
Second Vice-Chairman shall be to promote the objectives of the MAA in two year
colleges and secondary schools within the geographic area encompassed by the
Section.
d)
The duties of the Secretary-Treasurer shall be:
i.
To keep the minutes of official meetings of the Section and of the
Executive Committee, to maintain custody of records of the Section, to handle
official correspondence of the Section, and to notify the members of all
Section meetings.
ii.
To collect registration fees and the allowance provided by the National
office of MAA, to take care of all monies of the Section, to maintain proper
and accurate books of account of Section monies, and to pay the bills of the
Section. Checks for the expenditure of Section funds will be signed by the
Secretary-Treasurer of the Section.
- The
Executive Committee shall conduct the affairs of the Section between
Section meetings.
- If a
vacancy in the position of a Section Officer should occur, the Executive
Committee shall fill the vacancy by appointment of a member of the Section
to serve until the next meeting at which an election by the membership of
the Section can be held. In the case of a vacancy in the office of Section
Governor, the Board of Governors of the national organization elects a
replacement to complete the term.
Article IV
Meetings
- The Section shall hold an Annual Spring Meeting.
- Regular
meetings shall be planned under the direction of the First Vice-Chairman.
Locations of Annual Meetings shall be determined two years in advance.
- A
special meeting may be called, either by the Executive Committee or upon
petition by 15% of the Section membership. Arrangements for a special
meeting shall be made by the Executive Committee or by a committee appointed
for that purpose.
- Each
member of the Section shall be notified in writing, and an agenda of all
substantive issues to be discussed shall be sent, at least fifteen days in
advance of any regular meeting or special meeting of the Section.
- A quorum shall consist of those members who are
present at a properly called meeting.
Article V
Uses of Assets
- Registration
fees for each Section meeting shall be determined by the Executive
Committee.
- The assets
of the Intermountain Section shall be used exclusively to further the
purposes of the Section, and in the event of the dissolution of the
Section the remaining assets will be returned to the National organization
to be used for purposes consistent with the purposes of the national
organization.
Article VI
Committees
- A
Program Committee shall be appointed for each Section meeting. Its
Chairman shall represent the host institution for the meeting.
- A Nomination Committee shall be appointed annually.
See Article III, Section 5.
- Other
committees may be appointed by the Section Chairman, upon the advice of
the Executive Committee, to serve specified purposes and for designated
periods of time.
Article VII
Amendments
- These
Bylaws may be amended by a two-thirds majority of the votes cast by the
members at a regular or special meeting of the Section, subject to the
approval by the Board of Governors of the Mathematical Association of
America, Inc.
- A
proposed amendment shall be submitted in writing to every member of the
Section at least fifteen days prior to the meeting at which the voting on
the amendment will take place.
- When
an amendment has been approved by the members of the Section, it must be
submitted to the Committee on Sections for its recommendation to the Board
of Governors.
- A
complete revision of this set of Bylaws will be subject to the same
procedure as that for amending this set.
