Tuesday, November 10, 1998
OGDEN, Utah - Weber State University will award numerous scholarships to potential WSU students during its annual "College, Careers and Scholarship Showcase," Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Student Services Center. The showcase is geared toward incoming freshman for the 1999-2000 academic year, however, anyone interested in enrolling at the university is invited to attend.
"Incoming freshmen can complete the necessary applications and, if they meet the qualifications, within 60 minutes can walk away with an academic scholarship for next year," said Chris Rivera, WSU scholarship director and coordinator of the showcase. Students who don't qualify for immediate awards will have the opportunity to apply for a variety of other WSU scholarships.
Workshops on using the Internet and other resources to find funding for college also will be offered. "There are thousands of off-campus scholarships available," said Jose Gomez, scholarship specialist. Hour-long workshops will be held at 10:30 a.m. in Student Services Center 218, as well as at 1 and 3 p.m. in Student Services Center 141.
However, the showcase goes beyond scholarship opportunities. Rivera says the day is devoted to guiding prospective students through the admissions and financial-aid processes, highlighting the university's student services and providing career counseling.
"It's like one-stop shopping. Potential students can accomplish everything they need do before starting school next year," he said. "If students aren't sure about a career, they can talk first-hand to people about the different academic degrees WSU offers and how they can apply them in the workforce."
Throughout the day, visitors can meet with staff from a variety of areas including: Academic Advisement, Career Services, Campus Recreation, WSU-Davis Center, First Year Experience, Honors Program, Residence Life, Services for Women Students, Services for Multicultural Students and Student Recruitment. Additionally, representatives from WSU's business school and six academic colleges will be available to answer questions and provide tours of their facilities.
