TEACHING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM:

The Department takes pride in its work with students outside of the traditional classroom setting. For instance:

Nearly every member of the faculty has helped students do original research. Several of these student projects have won awards at state conferences. Others were presented at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research.

Our philosophers started a community-wide philosophy club, Nous, to encourage inquiry and excellence in philosophical studies throughout the greater-Ogden area.

Several faculty members are advisors to associated student

organizations – everything from Amnesty International and Young Democrats to College Republicans.

The Department sponsors and coaches a number of academic teams:

*The Model United Nations Program;

*The Ethics Bowl Team;

*The Mock Trial Team;

*The Moot Court Team.

The two competitive programs, Ethics Bowl and Mock Trial/Moot Court have amassed quite a record. The Ethics Bowl team has finished first at four regional tournaments; second at two others; and, in 2004, was fifth at the National Ethics Bowl. The Mock Trial and Moot Court teams have won three regional championships; three invitational tournaments; have placed among the top-ten teams at national tournaments nine times since 1998; to, we’ve had 35 All-Regional competitors and 13 All-Americans.
