Members of the psychology department were award and recognized in a variety of
ways this past year
Eric Amsel: Awarded the Carnegie/CASE 2006-2007 Utah Professor of the Year. Invited to give talks (Utah System of Higher Education, New Faculty Retreat, Ogden City Schools After School Program, Math Colloquium, WSU Adjunct Retreat, and Counseling Center) and was the Commencement Speaker for the graduates of General Studies. Invited to serve as a submission reviewer for RMPA, JPS, SRCD and JOGS.
Aaron Ashley: Served as an invited reviewer for New Ideas in Psychology.
Todd Baird: Invited to serve as a Supervisor to two candidates for clinical licensure.

Fowler:
Her
research
with a
student
was
selected for presentation at the
Council
on Undergraduate Research, Posters on the Hill in
Washington,
D.C. She also served as a proposal reviewer for NSF-REU grants, and was an
invited speaker at a conference for REU programs.
Azenett Garza:
Reviewed
a manuscript for
Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology.
Invited to give a talk sponsored by Women’s Studies, celebrating
Women’s
History Month.
Richard Grow: Invited to give in-service talks on Psychological Evaluation for counselors working at Vocational Rehabilitation and on the MMPI for the WSU Counseling Center.
Joseph Horvat: He was invited to serve as a reviewer for NMS, RMPA and APA.

Maria Parrilla de Kokal: Received a
Diversity Recognition
Award
for contributions by the WSU Academic Affairs Diversity Action Committee. She
was invited to give talks to the
Foster Grandparent Program, the
Hispanic
Area Council,
and
MEChA.
Leigh Shaw: Invited reviewer of manuscripts submitted to Social Development, British Journal of Developmental Psychology, New Ideas in Psychology, John Wiley Publishers, and the Jean Piaget Society.
Matthew Schmolesky: Gave an invited presentation to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Science and Technology Fellows.
2006-2007 Grants
Members of the psychology department were very productive in writing grants.
Eric Amsel: Awarded a Hemingway Collaborative Grant (with Gail Nikalson and Brian Streckline) and was a collaborator on a second one (by Matt Schmolesky, Lauren Fowler, Ron Meyers, and Jim Hutchins). He was also awarded the first Jennings Olsen Faculty Development Award and was a faculty advisor for an Undergraduate Research grant (Shane Bench).
Aaron Ashley: Awarded a Hemingway New Faculty Grant and was a collaborator on a Hemingway Collaborative Grant (by Matt Schmolesky, Lauren Fowler, Ron Meyers, and Jim Hutchins).
Lauren Fowler: Her NSF-REU grant was renewed for another three years. She was awarded a Hemingway Collaborative Grant (with Mathew Schmolesky, Ron Meyers, Jim Hutchins and other collaborators).
Azenett Garza: Awarded a Research, Scholarship and Professional Growth grant.
Richard Grow: Awarded a grant from the Veterans Administration to perform vocational testing.
Theresa Kay: Awarded a Weber Writes award..
Leigh Shaw: Awarded a Research, Scholarship and Professional Growth grant and a Weber Writes grant.

Community Service
Members of the department are professionally involved and engaged in the local, national, and international community.
Eric Amsel: Serves on the board of directors of the Treehouse Children's Museum, is the Board Vice President of the DaVinci Academy of Sciences and Arts and is Vice President of the Jean Piaget Society. He is also Associate Editor of New Ideas in Psychology.
Lauren Fowler: Re-elected as a counselor to the Council of Undergraduate Research for 3 years and to the National Council of Undergraduate Research board of governors for 3 years.
Joe Horvat: Elected as the first advisor to the newly formed Phi Alpha Omega, the American Psychological Association’s Division 45 (Society of the Scientific Study of Ethnic Minority Issues) minority students’ honors society.
Maria Parrilla deKokal: Serves as an executive council member on Ogden Weber Community Action Partnerships, and is a committee member on Weber Human Services Committee and the Foster Grandparent, Senior Companion, and Retired and Senior Volunteer Programs. She also Chair of the Ogden City School District Hispanic Community Committee and served as co-chair of the Diversity Planning Committee.
