To Transfer Psychology Courses to WSU

·         The transfer office can help you transfer to Weber State University the credits for courses taken elsewhere. These transfer credits can count towards your degree. However, only the Chair of the Psychology Department can accept the courses and credits as counting towards your Psychology major or minor.

·         To transfer Psychology courses taken elsewhere to your major or minor, you will need to set up a meeting with the Chair by contacting Aubrey Jenkins at 626-6247.

·         The Psychology Department accepts course credits from Psychology classes (no other departments) taken at regionally accredited universities (To check the accreditation of schools go to http://www.ope.ed.gov/accreditation/Search.asp. For an explanation of accreditation go to http://www.chea.org/degreemills/default.htm).

·         If the university where you took your Psychology course(s) was acceptable, the Chair will accept the credits from the courses as counting towards your Psychology major or minor.

·         For the Chair to accept a course as replacing a course in the WSU Psychology curriculum, you must demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Chair that the courses are equivalent, typically by bringing in a course description or syllabi.

Declare a BIS in Psychology

·         Call 626-7713 and set up an appointment with Judy Elsley, Director of the BIS Program, in room 140 of the Student Services Building.

·         You will need to decide on your 3 areas of emphasis, one of which is Psychology.

·         Meet with each department Chair and discuss which classes are required.

·         You will be required to take Psychology 3600, 3610 + 12 additional credit hours.

·         Psychology 1010 will NOT count among the 18 credits you need if you counted it as a Gen Ed class.

·         Set up a meeting with Eric Amsel (626-6247), the Psychology Department Chair, in SS370.

·         Discuss with him which courses will serve as the additional 12 credit hours in Psychology.

Declare a Teaching Major

·         Download a Program of Study from (click here).

·         Fill it out as completely as possible, declaring Psychology Teaching as your major.

·         Bring it to Aubrey Jenkins in room 370 of the SS building.

·         You will be required to take Psych 4000, Advanced General, as part of the 36 credit hours major, in additional to all other requirements.

Declare a Teaching Minor

·         Download a Program of Study from (click here).

·         Fill it out as completely as possible, declaring Psychology Teaching as your minor.

·         Bring it to Aubrey Jenkins in room 370 of the SS building.

·         You will be required to take Psych 4000, Advanced General, as part of the 18 credit hours minor.

Become an Honor Student in Psychology

·         Enroll in the General Honors Program and complete 6 hours of Honors Courses.

·         You must maintain an overall GPA of 3.3.

·         As part of the 36 credits required to fulfill your Psychology major, you will need to complete 6 hours from Psych 4910, Senior Project. The purpose of which is to do research worthy of presenting at a professional meeting of psychologists, such as WPA or RMPA.

Find or change your advisor

·         To change your advisor you may talk to Aubrey Jenkins in the Psychology Department office, or simply talk to the professor who you would like to be your advisor and they will be able to assist you.

·         There are no forms to fill out to change advisors.

Change sections of the same course

·         Changing the section of a course is the same procedure as changing any course.

·         If you are changing courses or sections within the first three weeks of classes, just go to on-line registration page as http://weber.edu (click on Current Student), add the new course and drop the old one.

·         If on-line registration is closed, pick up a purple add/drop slip from the Psychology Department office in room 370 of the SS building.

·         Fill out the slip as completely as possible for the class you wish to drop as well as for the class you wish to add.

·         Get it stamped and signed by Aubrey Jenkins in the Psychology Department office in room 370 of the SS building.

·         Take the purple slip to the registration window and they will take care of the rest.

Enroll in a Research Class in Psychology

·         First and foremost you will need to find a faculty mentor who will be willing to sponsor you.

·         This can happen in one of two ways:

o   You may have your own idea for research which a faculty member is willing to sponsor.

o   You may want to be part of a faculty member’s project. (To find out the sort of research going on in the department, read faculty profiles on the web, look at the research board across from the Psychology Department office).

·         Your faculty mentor will want to discuss with you there research course in which you want to enroll. There are three courses:

o   2800 – Meant for students with no research experience and who have yet to take Research Methods (can be taken for 1-2 credits)

o   4800 – Meant for students with some research experience and who have taken Research Methods (can be taken for 2-3 credits)

o   4910 – Meant for students who would like to complete a senior thesis (must be taken for 6 credits, typically over two semesters).

·         You and your faculty mentor will also want to discuss the credit hours and details of the work expectation of the course.

·         Upon agreement, there will be a form to complete (click the course above), which will serve as a contract between you and the faculty member regarding the course.

·         Complete the forms with your faculty mentor, and then give it to Aubrey Jenkins in the Psychology office and she will put a clearance in the system so you will be able to register for the course.

·         Upon getting the clearance, go into your student portal and register for the class. To do this go to the bottom of the page and enter the CRN number for the class.

o   You may want to have a faculty member’s specify a reading topic for you.

·         Your faculty mentor will want to discuss with you the topics and issues which you want to explore, as well as the credit hours and the work expectation of the course.

·         Upon agreement, there will be a form to complete (click here), which will serve as a contract between you and the faculty member regarding the reading course.

·         Complete the forms with your faculty mentor, and then give it to Aubrey Jenkins in the Psychology office and she will put a clearance in the system so you will be able to register for the course.

·         Upon getting the clearance, go into your student portal and register for the class. To do this go to the bottom of the page and enter the CRN number for the class.

Enroll in Psychology Practicum

·         Fill out an application for Practicum (Click here).

·         The application requests details about your course work and background and asks you to rank in order your preferences as to which of the 4 or 5 practicum sites you want to work.

·         Your application will be reviewed by the Practicum Committee, Chaired by Dr. Theresa Kay.

·         Students whose applications are sufficiently strong will be called in for an interview with members of the Practicum Committee.

·         Practicum supervisors will call students with information about their status before the end of the semester.

Enroll in Co-op Work Experience

·         You must meet with Dr. Amsel, the Department Chair.

·         Explain the duties of your job with him in order to see if it is related to Psychology.

·         Talk to Aubrey Jenkins for a clearance and fill out an override slip.

·         Take the override slip to Registration.

Preparing to Graduate

·         Before you can graduate you must be cleared as a Psychology major or minor.

o   Clearing a Minor in Psychology:

o   She will electrically clear you.

·         Clearing a Teaching Minor or a Major in Psychology:

o   Contact Aubrey Jenkins in the Psychology Department office at 626-6247 or in room 370 of the SS building and ask for an appointment with the department chair for a graduation evaluation.

o   She will ask you for your W#, so please have it handy.

o   The appointments are approximately 15 minutes.
