Quantitative Literacy Policy

The psychology department voted in Fall, 2006 to reaffirmed that the traditional Quantitative Literacy courses (Math 1030 or 1040 or 1050 or 1080) will continue to serve as the prerequisite for Psy 3600 (Statistics), which is a Psychology Department major requirement and is itself a prerequisite for Psy 3610 (Methods). This is spelled out in the following web site: http://departments.weber.edu/aac/qlbymajor.html

The vote means that students who complete the new Quantitative Literacy course (Phil 2200) can not used it as a prerequisite for PSY 3600 (Statistics).  Moreover,  in a change of policy, the Psychology department will NOT accept for transfer for Psy 3600 any College of Social and Behavioral Science statistics course taken since the Summer of 2007. This includes the statistics courses from CJ, Sociology and Social Work.  Our reasoning is that these Statistics courses allow students to use Phil 2200 as a QL prerequisite. The vote leaves three options for Psych majors:

1. Complete the Psychology Department's Psych Statistics (Psy3600) class, earning a C or higher, or have successfully completed CJ or Social Work Statistics (with a C or higher) prior to the Summer 2007 semester.

2.  Test out of Psy 3600, by completing a department approved exam, which determines your skills in psychological statistics. Passing the exam will allow you to count any statistics course taken at any regionally accredited university or college as fulfilling the prerequisite for Psy 3610.

3. Complete a psychological statistics course elsewhere (University of Utah, Utah State University or any other regionally accredited university or college) and transfer the credit to your psychology major. This will require the approval of the Chair, which should be solicited before enrolling in the course.
