Balloon Launch Glider (B):

Friday, Oct 26 Notes from Science Olympiad Teacher Training Camp Presented by Sheri Trbovich (Utah event coordinator)

Teams should be prepared with balloon, launching system and glider

Event is indoors (Dee Event Center), however there is a little air current

          Balloon Launcher

Each team needs their own balloon launcher

The balloon launching system you practice with is the one you want to use for the competition

Practice launching your balloon MANY times with your launcher

Utah event coordinators do allow practicing with launcher before the event, as long as there is not another event going on at the time

              Glider

Glider needs to meet requirements

The best gliders come close to the weight (at least 2 grams) and proper dimensions

                                    Wing: 10 cm x 48 cm

                                    Stabilizer: 9 cm x 28 cm

Gliders that have done the best go the full dimensions

A spare glider would be good to have

Check airplane (glider) ahead of time to fix if necessary

There is not impound time

Most importantly, do NOT skimp on the glider (spend a lot of time working on it)

          Balloon

It is recommended that each team brings their own balloon

Whatever you practice with (balloon and balloon launching system) is

going to be best for your team

You can bring your own helium to blow up balloon if needed

Find a place to keep balloons safely on competition day

Practice Log

Do more than 10 tests and record the times

Minimum of 4 parameters required to be recorded on date log for each of 10 or more test flights flown prior to the competition:

Approximate Height of balloon at glider launch (10 meters)

Glider mass at launch

Flight time

Any other parameter selected by the team; however, the same parameter must be recorded for each flight.

          Flights

Check in before official flight time

Flights times are scheduled every 10 minutes, with 2 minutes to

launch and 8 minutes of flying time

Timing begins when the 1st glider leaves the balloon

Up to 3 flights are allowed

Only 2 flights are tabulated with the 3rd flight added in if there’s a tie

Tie breaker is the longest 3rd flight

Tip: Gently tip forward so the plane starts out in a forward motion

which can result in a longer flying time

          Inspection Station at Check-In:

                    Weight/mass

                        Dimensions

Bio Process Lab/ Cell Biology: (B/C)

Sat, Oct 27

Lab-oriented competition

The event will consist of a series of lab stations using process skills to answer

questions and/or perform a required task

            Process skills include formulating and evaluating hypotheses and procedures;

collecting data using scientific instruments; making observations; presenting

and or interpreting data; making inferences and conclusions

Scoring is based on correct answers and/or proper technique
