TEST FOR HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT
![]()
General Educational Development (GED) Test - The GED tests are designed to measure skills and concepts generally associated with four years of high school instruction. By passing the GED, individuals may earn as many as five high school credits toward a high school diploma. It can also be used as partial fulfillment of admission requirements to college when a high school diploma is not available. Most employers accept the GED in place of a high school diploma for hiring purposes.
The battery consists of five individual tests in the following subjects: Writing Skills, Social Studies, Science, Reading, and Mathematics. Each test has a time limit of 65 to 120 minutes. The tests are multiple choice except the Writing Skills test which has an essay requirement.
Under normal situations, to take the GED test, a person must be at least 18 and their high school class must have graduated. If the person is 17 or 18 and the class has not graduated, the following letters are required:
a) A signed letter on official school district stationery from the school district within which the applicant resides indicating the applicant is not regularly enrolled in school;
b) A signed letter of authorization from the applicant's parent or legal guardian authorizing the test (applicant age 18, or presenting a marriage license, is exempt from this requirement).
GED preparation courses are offered in most school districts. Study books are available in most book stores and libraries. A practice test is available at the Student Services Testing Center.
