COMPASS Testing for Math and English Placement
Every student must complete certain English and math core
requirements. Placement in the appropriate classes can be
critical to a student's success. The COMPASS English and math placement
exams offers students the opportunity to be placed in math and
English courses that may better match their level of ability.
Mathematics Placement
and COMPASS
Effective Fall Semester 2002, all new students with an ACT math
subscore of 22 or less and anyone with ACT scores more than two
years old (24 months prior to the first day of class) will begin
with Math 0950, Pre-algebra. If you feel your math skills are
above pre-algebra, you may take the Math COMPASS exam and
possibly be placed in a higher level math course.
The COMPASS test, a computerized exam, asks a series of
straightforward, multiple choice questions. There is no time
limit, but most individuals finish in less than an hour.
To fulfill the Quantitative Literacy Requirement (also known as General
Education Math or QL), you must complete one of the following
courses with a grade of "C" or better:
Math QL1030 Contemporary Math
Math QL1040 Introduction to Statistics
Math QL1050 College
Algebra
Math QL1080 Pre-Calculus
OR, any mathematics course with
Math QL1050 or QL1080 as a Prerequisite,
OR, achieve a score of 3 or higher
on the Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus or
AP Statistics exam,
OR, achieve a score of 65 or higher on the
College Algebra Math COMPASS exam.
English Placement and COMPASS
If your ACT English subscore is 16 or below, or
you have NO ACT score, you will begin with English
0960, a developmental English course. You may
take the English COMPASS exam to
possibly be placed in English 1010.
To fulfill the
Composition Requirement
(commonly called English),
you must complete both
English 1010 and English
2010 with a grade of "C" or
better. If your ACT English subscore is 17 or above, you
will be placed in English 1010.
