Sports-related Traumatic Injury - Objectives

1. Describe the structural and functional classification of joints.

 

2. Define the structures of a typical synovial joint. Be able to identify these structures from an illustration.

 

3. Describe the difference between the function of a ligament and the function of a tendon.

 

4. Describe types of movements at synovial joints to include: gliding, flexion, extension, hyperextension, abduction, adduction, circumduction, and rotation.

 

5. Identify and describe the function of the main anatomical components of the knee joint to include:

a. patellar ligament

b. oblique popliteal ligament

c. arcuate popliteal ligament

d. tibial collateral ligament,

e. fibular collateral ligament

f. intracapsular ligaments to include the anterior cruciate ligament and the posterior cruciate ligament

g. Articular discs (menisci)

 

6. Identify on an image the femur, fibula, tibia, ACL, PCL, lateral and medial meniscus, fibular collateral ligament, tibial collateral ligament, and transverse ligament.

 

7. A. Define the purpose of a field exam by an athletic trainer.

 

    B. List the steps an athletic trainer would take in a field exam an injured athlete to include:

1. Evaluating an unconscious athlete.

2. Evaluating a conscious athlete.

3. Define criteria to be met before an athlete may be moved to the sidelines.

 

8. Define the purpose of the following diagnostic tests in establishing an ACL tear: Lachman, Anterior Drawer, Pivot Shift, and MRI imaging.

 

9. Define the following medical terms: hemarthrosis, hemorrhage, knee flexion, varus, valgus.

 

10. Pertaining to the treatment of an ACL tear:

a. Define what an arthroscope is, how it works, and when it might be used.

b. Define the procedure for surgically reconstructing an ACL tear.

c. Define 3 graft options for replacing a torn ACL.

d. Define goals of physical therapy to include the use of electrical muscle stimulation (EMS).

 

11. Define the roles of the following health care professionals in diagnosing and treating an ACL tear: athletic trainer, radiology technician, radiologist, physical therapist, and operating team including orthopedic surgeon, OR nurse, OR technician and anesthesiologist.
