Instructor's Note:
Jon and Laura's chemistry screening
results are very similar. The elevated AST and ALT levels indicate
liver damage through the invasion of the liver cells by the
hepatitis viruses. Lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline
phosphatase are also produced in smaller amounts in the liver and
are reflected by the slightly elevated serum levels. Elevated
bilirubin is an indicator of loss of liver function, since the liver
is the key organ for elimination of wastes. These results are key
findings for physicians looking for damaging processes to the liver
such as hepatitis. |
