Data Administration/LAN Coordination Operational Plan
At Weber State University, the LAN coordination and data administration are combined in a single administrative unit. The following are the operational plans for each of these important functions.
Data administration:The basic data administration functions are to recommend and implement actions to improve the quality of administrative data and to provide improved data access to WSU data users. These functions entail working closely with numerous administrative areas at Weber State University and have far-reaching effects on the university community. Current implementation actions include the following (grouped by long-term goal).
Support and enhance administrative transaction data systems within the WSU Integrated Workgroup Environment and WSU Intranet development strategies (LTG-D4):Identify and recommend actions to be taken to improve the quality & integrity of data at Weber State University.
Assist Administrative Computing with the creation and maintenance of the WSU on-line telephone directory.
Assist in web-enabling the university's budget development process.
Create and maintain the WSU metadata dictionary.
Design and implement a university data warehouse, using intranet technologies and resolving current data integrity issues with the assistance of the IDA/IIR teams.
Recommend, install and maintain software that will allow improved access to university data.
Assist network management with the development of the WSU Intranet to meet the technical specifications of the data warehousing project.
Work with WSU Budget & Institutional Research (BIR) and Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) staff to identify and define data sources to meet official WSU reporting requirements.
Work with Administrative Computing, the Provost's Office, BIR, and others to resolve university data integrity issues across major systems, such as FRS, HRS and STAARS.
Work with Data Administration, Network Management and Administrative Computing in the creation of the WSU Intranet.
The basic function of LAN Coordination is to plan, implement, and administer Novell Directory Services (NDS) for the Weber State University data network. This function requires close coordination with Network Management to assure data network continuity and reliability. Current implementation actions include the following (grouped by long-term goal).
Construct and maintain modern, accessible voice/data/video communications systems for both Internet and Intranet access (LTG-A2):Design and implement NDS partition and replication strategies to provide fault tolerance of the network environment for WSU data network users.
Assist network management in providing reliable data communications to all WSU users.
Install and configure NetWare file servers in the WSU data network tree where necessary.
Provide technical support to other LAN Administrators with hardware/software configuration and network operating system issues.
Improve access and provide fault tolerance for network applications.
Troubleshoot and repair NDS problems as they arise.
Plan and implement network operating system upgrades.
Maintain Novell CNI status and provide on-campus CNA and CNE training for university staff and others.
